When I use LACRISERT®, will it feel like there is something stuck in
my eyes?
If you are suffering from Dry Eye, you may already be experiencing the symptom of foreign body sensation—the feeling you have something in your eye.1 LACRISERT® can relieve this symptom better than artificial tears.2
Some LACRISERT® users do feel like they have something in their eye. You may experience foreign body sensation if LACRISERT® is not placed correctly in your eye. You can avoid this discomfort by placing LACRISERT® properly.1 Click here to see the insertion instructions, which provide a simple illustration of the steps.
If you do not place LACRISERT® properly, you may remove it and insert another one. Be sure to follow the instructions for insertion or removal.
If necessary, adding a drop or more of artificial tears may also help relieve any foreign body sensation you might experience.3
What can I do if my vision becomes blurry?
Blurred vision is a common symptom of Dry Eye that, in many cases, can be improved with the use of LACRISERT®. However, LACRISERT® can also be the cause of blurred vision. Exercise caution when operating hazardous machinery or driving a motor vehicle.1
If you do experience blurring of vision, especially around the same time every day, your eye care professional may suggest that you remove LACRISERT® 3 to 4 hours after placing it, until the blurriness subsides. You may insert another LACRISERT® later, if needed.1,2 Be sure to carefully follow the instructions for insertion and removal.
Adding a drop or more of artificial tear products may be helpful in soothing blurred vision after inserting LACRISERT®.2,4 Using LACRISERT® overnight while you sleep can also help to relieve blurry vision that you may experience upon insertion.5
Can LACRISERT® accidentally fall out of my eye?
Yes, occasionally this can happen, especially if you place LACRISERT® improperly or if the pocket of your lower eyelid is not deep enough to keep LACRISERT® in place.1
Also, you may forget you are wearing LACRISERT® and rub your eyes too hard, especially upon awakening. This can result in mistakenly pushing the insert out of your eye. If this happens, you may insert another LACRISERT®.1
Can I use LACRISERT® along with artificial tears or other Dry Eye treatments?
Yes. LACRISERT® can be used at the same time as artificial tear products or other Dry Eye treatments.3,4
Can I sleep with LACRISERT® in my eyes?
Yes, LACRISERT® will dissolve in your eye over time.1,2 However, if you prefer not to sleep with it, LACRISERT® can easily be removed, following the instructions.
Can I use LACRISERT® if I am wearing contact lenses?
Yes. Be sure to put your contact lenses in before LACRISERT® to avoid your lenses getting over coated by the contents of the insert.5
Will you be able to see LACRISERT® in my eye?
No. LACRISERT® is a small, clear insert that is placed out of sight, inside the pocket of your lower eyelid. The contents of LACRISERT® are off-white.1
How long will LACRISERT® take to dissolve in my eye?
The amount of time that LACRISERT® takes to dissolve will vary. However, a study shows that LACRISERT® begins to dissolve comfortably within in minutes.1
How long will LACRISERT® last in my eye?
In most Dry Eye sufferers, LACRISERT® provides continuous, all-day relief of symptoms. The insert lasts, on average, from 14 to 18 hours.1

LACRISERT® is indicated in patients with moderate to severe Dry Eye syndromes, including keratoconjunctivitis sicca. LACRISERT® is indicated especially in patients who remain symptomatic after an adequate trial of therapy with artificial tear solutions. LACRISERT® is also indicated for patients with exposure keratitis, decreased corneal sensitivity, and recurrent corneal erosions.
Important Safety Information
Do not use LACRISERT® if you are allergic to hydroxypropyl cellulose. Instructions for inserting and removing LACRISERT® should be carefully followed. If improperly placed, LACRISERT® may result in a scratch to the cornea of your eye. Because LACRISERT® may cause temporary blurred vision, please use caution when driving or operating machinery. Rubbing the eye(s) containing LACRISERT® should be avoided. You should always discuss this safety information with your doctor. The following adverse reactions have been reported but were in most instances mild and temporary: temporary blurring of vision, eye discomfort or irritation, matting or stickiness of eyelashes, increased sensitivity to light, eyelid swelling, and eye redness. Talk to your doctor if you have side effects that bother you or that do not go away. You are encouraged to report side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
